Background Checks for Utility Companies.

Senator Charles Schumer (Democrat/NY) plans to introduce a bill to congress that will make it mandatory for all major utility companies and critical infrastructure plants to conduct background checks on workers with access to sensitive areas within the utilities.

Currently, background checks are only conducted on nuclear power plant employees who have unescorted access to the facilities. Senator Schumer explains that “thorough background checks on all workers with access to the most sensitive areas of these operations are a must.” A recent Department of Homeland Security report revealed that Al Qaeda is attempting to recruit extremists that are willing to infiltrate US electric, gas, and water utilities, which poses a significant threat to U.S. National Security.
