A McDonald’s employee allegedly attacked two customers with a metal rod in Greenwich Village, New York last Thursday. Rayon McIntosh, 31, became furious when two female customers jumped the counter (reason not disclosed in the article…I guess this isn’t important?) at the McDonalds, and then proceeded to pick up a metal rod and began beating the women.
One of the victims is still in the hospital with a fractured skull and a broken arm; the other suffered a deep cut. The most disturbing fact of this crime was that Rayon was a convicted felon and had recently served a 10-year prison sentence for manslaughter. If McDonald’s would have conducted an employment background check on Mr. McIntosh, he probably wouldn’t have been hired and this tragedy could have been avoided. How many workplace violence stories must we hear before employers realize they have a duty to protect their workforce?
